Thermage Tightens Skin on Both Face and Body
In June 2007, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the device for treatment of wrinkles on the upper and lower eyelids. This makes ThermaCool the only FDA-approved device able to tighten the delicate skin around the eyes; it also makes Thermage an easy, non-invasive alternative to plastic surgery. A few weeks later, Thermage was approved for treatment of the lips. Just as Thermage can tighten the skin to erase lines and wrinkles on other areas of the face, it is now approved to help diminish fine lines around the lips for fuller shape and more definition. During treatment with Thermage, radio frequency energy is delivered quickly and painlessly to the targeted area. This energy heats the collagen deep within the skin, causing a twofold reaction. First, existing collagen contracts and remodels for a tightening effect; second, new collagen is produced, providing further support and firmness to the skin. This process continues for several months after treatment, so that results continue to improve during this time. But Thermage isn’t just for the face – the device has also been approved for use on the body. In early 2006, Thermage was approved for body treatments and Thermage began studying the technology to address wrinkles and skin laxity on the arms, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, legs and hands. A year later, Thermage introduced its first two body treatments, "Hands by Thermage" and "Tummy by Thermage." The hand treatment uses a specially designed treatment tip to improve sagging skin and diminish the appearance of veins on the hands. In a clinical trial of 40 patients, most participants noticed an immediate skin tightening effect with continued improvement over the next several months as new collagen formed. The tummy treatment helps provide firmness for patients experiencing post partum or post weight loss sagging skin. Thermage may now also be used to treat the upper and lower eyelids as well as the lips.
